10/3-10/04 (NC) History of the Word: The Hip-Hop Musical - at the Carolina Theatre of Durham at 8:00pm. About History of the WordHistory of the Word is a fresh, captivating theatrical event that captures the voices of today's youth through hip-hop and spoken word poetry. History of the Word was originally conceived by Orin Wolf, who commissioned six of the country's most talented spoken word poets to write about their experiences in high school and the issues they felt were the most important, personal, and complex. Out of this work came a book of hundreds of poems, which then became the basis for playwright Ben Snyder's script. The play follows six high school students over a single day as they struggle with identity and, through writing and expressing themselves, move toward empowerment and acceptance. History of the Word fuses hip-hop, spoken word, music and theatre into a truly extraordinary, unique, smart and thrilling theatrical experience. $5.00 for students. FMI: Contact Aaron Bare at 919.560.3040 ext 224 or email aaron@carolinatheatre.org or visit www.carolinatheatre.org.
