TRIBES Magazine Turns 3 Helps Urban Youth, Expands its Mission from Coast to Coast and Kicks off TRIBES Magazine Live -- By Sandi Freeman

TRIBES ENTERTAINMENT – The Southeast’s #1 platform for independent artists, musicians and writers expands its mission to the west coast and abroad, and gives back to urban youth programs through TRIBES YOUTH PROJECT (TYP). Headquartered in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina, TRIBES Magazine has been in the streets and online since 2004 and primarily marketed in southeast cities of the U.S. Expansion to the west coast and Jamaica will start in the summer of 2007.

“The decision to expand was based on what I saw was an overwhelming need for a voice like TRIBES, in places where urban writers’ and artists’ expression is overdue,” says TRIBES Entertainment President, Leslie Cunningham. TRIBES’ initial mission, which is still intact today, is to provide a needed platform for unsigned/ underground urban artists, writers and musicians. TRIBES also features inspiring interviews and stories about mainstream artists like actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, reggae superstar Damian Marley, playwright Tyler Perry, jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, the legendary Last Poets, R&B artist Lalah Hathaway, hip hop legends KRS-One, Christopher “Play” Martin and many others. TRIBES is also available online at www.tribesmagazine.com and has a tremendous online following.

The web site includes TRIBES Radio Online (TRO) which broadcasts 100% indie artists all the time, event calendars, hot links and more. TRIBES also launched TRIBES My Space, the home of TRIBES TOP 24 which picks and charts the best indie artist tracks of artists who are on TRIBES my space friends list. Go to page 26 or visit www.myspace.com/tribesmagazine to find out who’s Hot.

TRIBES YOUTH PROJECT (TYP)

TRIBES Entertainment has been working on other exciting projects, such as TRIBES Youth Project (TYP). TYP is one of the many ways TRIBES aims to give back to urban communities. TYP is designed to support urban youth art programs that will help explore and nurture creative talent. By connecting urban youth with seasoned independent artists, youth can explore their passions and sharpen their talents.

TYP partners with community organizations already serving to create and/or support art programs. TYP recently joined forces with the Haven House - Second Round Youth Center Arts Program in Raleigh, NC. Haven House is a private, non-profit agency that serves the needs of young people in difficult situations - from homelessness to running away to family, school or life problems. Haven House’s Second Round Youth Center, directed by Matt Shnars, provides a safe space for raleigh area youth ages 16-21 (85% African-American).

The center offers street outreach, a structured day program, educational services, residential services, Second Round boxing classes, counseling, food, and now an Arts Program! “We provide culturally competent services and tools to be able to engage the kids. Once they get hooked, they have something to connect to,” says Shnars. Boxing coach volunteer Darek James, says the Second Round Boxing Program provides youth with a positive way to express their frustrations. In addition, it teaches them teamwork and enhances their work ethic.

The center’s new art program, created by center coordinator Sherita Young, will encourage youth to transcend cultural barriers through music, dance, visual art, and creative writing. The program, which will emphasize self discipline and teamwork, will strive to provide a positive creative environment for clients by connecting youth with skillful artists from the community. Weekly classes will include spoken word/hip hop, drawing, dance and creative writing classes. TRIBES Entertainment is donating 10% of all TRIBES Magazine corporate advertising income to the arts program to purchase arts and crafts materials, instruments, DJ Equipment and food. For more information about volunteering or donating to the Second Round Arts Program, contact Sherita Young at (919) 719-0872 ext 115 to volunteer or donate to the Second Round Program.
